The Historic Center of Tegucigalpa
Nestled in the mountains of central Honduras lies Tegucigalpa. Inhabited originally by natives who enjoyed its cool climate, Spaniard colonists later settled in the area to exploit silver ore deposits. In 1880, the city became the capital of Honduras after the seat of government was transferred there from Comayagua. That same year, many European architects were hired to design many of the new government buildings and public parks. Many of these architects were later hired by the city’s upper class to build their houses and mansions.
